Hello! I’m Teresa, and I’m thrilled that you’re here at my little corner of the internet. It will be wonderful having you with me on this adventure of creating delicious food, taking beautiful pictures of it, and enjoying it with the people we love.
My first experience of muësli was in the homiest of cafes in Zurich, Switzerland. I was tired, hungry, and a very long way from the comfort of home. Some of the other patrons were playing games, and the street outside was mistily quiet. I don’t remember what I thought I was ordering… a smoothie? A fruit bowl? I just know I was not expecting to meet one of my favorite breakfasts.
Muësli is somewhat like oatmeal. (People, I know. I hated oatmeal for years – mushy, tasteless…) As with so many, okay, all foods, you just have to make it right. Don’t cook or soak it to a pulp, add yummy extras, and eat it right away. It’s delicious, I promise.
There are different ways to prepare muësli. Some recipes ask for soaking the cereal in yogurt overnight, or perhaps adding fresh pieces of fruit. However, this version calls for soaking the cereal in milk, and only for half an hour. There is already dried fruit mixed with the cereal, so I don’t add any fresh pieces.
Also, the coffee was wonderful.
quick oats
rolled oats
flax seeds
golden raisins
dried mango
dried figs
dried cranberries
hazelnuts
sunflower seeds
chia seeds
milk
cream
brown sugar
toasted coconut
almonds
First we’re going to stir the cereal mixture together. In a nice large bowl place the oats, seeds, dried fruit, and hazelnuts. You’ll need to chop your hazelnuts and some of the fruit – you want about 1/4-1/2 inch pieces. Then simply put it all in a sealed container! It will be enough for several servings at least, depending how much you like per breakfast.
First thing in the morning, pour the desired amount into your favorite muësli bowl, and add enough milk to cover the cereal. It will need to soak for about half to three-quarters of an hour. Much shorter, and your oats will still be chewy; much longer and they will turn into the alleged mush.
While you’re waiting, make your coffee, prepare the rest of your breakfast, get dressed… whatever you do in your morning routine.
Now it is time to add the last touches! Pour on some cream or extra milk if if needs it, and put a scoop of brown sugar on top. Sprinkle the coconut and sliced almonds over all, and have yourself a lovely morning.
Mix the oats, flax seeds, raisins, mango, figs, cranberries, hazelnuts, sunflower seeds, and chia seeds in a bowl. Store in a sealed container.
First thing in the morning, pour as much as you like into a bowl, and cover with milk. Make sure it is stirred, and then let it soak for 30-45 minutes.
Top with cream (if you like), brown sugar, toasted coconut, and sliced almonds.
Notes
The soaking time is your choice. However, much shorter than half an hour, and the oats are still quite chewy. Too much longer, and they become quite mushy.
