Hazelnut Latte

Hazelnut Latte

I am so excited about this hazelnut latte! For one thing, Oregon is famous for hazelnuts – over 90% of hazelnuts grown in the United States come from Oregon. And since this little part of the world is pretty special to me, I’m excited! 😉

Hazelnut lattes are one of my favorites, but of course most (all?) of the recipes I found use unhealthy ingredients, such as artificial syrups. This recipe is the answer to that problem – and I think it’s a delicious one.

  • espresso
  • hazelnut milk
  • half & half
  • agave

This latte is completely healthy and “whole” food. There is no artificial syrup or sweetener – instead, it uses real hazelnut milk and agave syrup. Since nut milks aren’t as creamy as other milks, I like to use half & half, or even a little heavy cream to give the latte a liiiittle more richness. As usual though, feel free to adjust until you get it how you like it.

how to make the hazelnut latte…

Simply brew the espresso and pour it in a cup. Add the hazelnut milk and half & half and stir in the sweetener.

If you’d like an iced version, fill your cup with ice before adding the latte ingredients.

how to/tips on making hazelnut milk…

Hazelnut milk is easy to make at home. All you need is some hazelnuts and water! Also, the longer you soak the nuts, the better. Leave them on the counter for at least overnight or eight hours – this makes the milk thicker and not so watery.

Chop the hazelnuts and place them in a jar or sealable container. Add two cups of water, and cover.

The next morning, place your hazelnut/water mixture in a blender or food processor. If you would like to make sweetened milk, add a tablespoon or so of agave syrup, maple syrup, or whichever sweetener you prefer, and then process for a couple minutes.

Line a bowl with a linen towel, and pour your mixture in. Strain the hazelnuts out with the towel, pressing to get as much milk out of the hazelnuts as possible. Transfer the hazelnut milk to a bottle or jar and store in the refrigerator for up to five days.

Ingredients //

For the Latte

  • ¼ cup Espresso or Very Strong Coffee (2 oz)
  • ¼ cup Hazelnut Milk
  • ¼ cup Cream, Half & Half, or Whole Milk
  • 1 tsp Agave Syrup or Sweetener of choice

For the Hazelnut Milk

  • cups Chopped Hazelnuts
  • 2 cups Water

Instructions //

For the Latte

  • For a hot latte, simply pour the espresso into a cup and add hazelnut milk and half & half. Sweeten with whichever sweetener you like - agave is my choice.
  • For an iced latte, fill a cup with ice, and pour the espresso over it. Add the hazelnut milk and half & half, and stir in your sweetener. Again, I like agave best here, but use what you like!

For the Hazelnut Milk

  • If you can't find hazelnut milk, it's quite easy to make your own! Soak the chopped hazelnuts in the water overnight or for around 8 hours.
  • In the morning, place the soaked hazelnuts and water in a blender or food processor and process for a minute or so, until the hazelnuts are very finely chopped.
  • Strain the hazelmut milk through a towel into a jar or glass bottle and ta-da! Your very own hazelnut milk.
